More about Mala
Mala is our winter site in the north-east of the island, beside the Presa de Mala dam. With NE to E winds you ride the ridge on a steady sea breeze, with the plains and the reservoir laid out below.
Why fly here
- Made for winter. From October through March, when many coastal sites are waiting for the right wind, Mala comes into its own as the sea breeze sets up along the ridge.
- That winter light. The low autumn and winter sun turns the plains gold and the reservoir silver. Photos from Mala have a colour you don't get the rest of the year.
- Everything close. The launch is a short drive from Arrecife, and the car is minutes from where you land.
What to expect on the day
A short drive on the LZ-1 brings you to the dam. Your pilot lays out the wing on the ridge, you step off together, and the breeze carries you along the hillside, soaring back and forth above the fields.
Best for
Winter visitors, and anyone who wants to feel what ridge soaring is like: staying up on the wind instead of heading straight down.
